Catching up with: Troy Sturrock

SHARE:

Aussiesnowboard.com got the chance to catch up with ’up and comer’ Troy Sturrock

Name :   Troy Sturrock

Age :   18

Years Riding :   3

Home Mountain :   Perisher

Sponsors: Ashbury, Arbor snowboards, 3CS outerwear, Elm company, Howl gloves, Kibs Clothing, Sandbox and Board Supply CO.

So Troy, you just spent a bit of time over in the US. How was the overseas winter?

Yeah overseas was sick, I spent 6 weeks in Bear Mountain on Send it snowboard camps and it was the funnest trip I’ve done so far. Sick mountain and features as well as a good crew and coaches. Then I went to Tahoe for 2 weeks but had to cut it early cause I broke my rib.

Wanna tell us a little about the camp?

Send it snowboard camps are the most fun camp on earth. Mark Amadio and Andy Lloyd run it, they are two great riders and do a great job or organizing the trip so you get the most out of it in your riding and getting to see the USA. They are going back to Bear this season so get on it.

Are you back to 100% after breaking your rib, has it in anyway affected your riding?

Yeah. I caught my toes coming into jump and smashed my shoulder into the ground and thought I did my collarbone but it was actually a rib. Yeah I’m back 100% and cant wait to shred Peri this season.

What have you been doing to fill in the time between the seasons?

I do a lot of skateboarding and I’m still at school so that fills in my days. Also working at Woollies

You competed in the 2012 ESS Billy Rail Jam and got 3rd, what was that like competing with some of the Aussie big dogs like Jye and Cohen?

Yeah that was a fun set up this year, nothing to serious to start things off. I just did some tricks that I knew I had in the bag and tried to make it to the end and to ride as solid as I could. And competing next to the big dogs can be a bit intimidating with the tricks they are doing, but we are all homies so its just like riding with your friends.

Do you plan on competing in any of bigger Aussie competitions this season?

I’m hoping to get down to Victoria for some bigger comps like Cattlemans Rail Jam and Stylewars, as well as the Thredbo series.

So this will be your first season based in Jindabyne, what are you plans?

Finally 18 and moving down there, my plans are to ride as much as possible and progress while having fun with friends.

So who do you like to ride with?

I ride with a bunch of kids called the BHK, we is a crew out of Perisher that just has a fun time snowboarding and learning new tricks together and filming edits. We also travel together overseas and have massive group houses which are always fun.

Shout out?

BHK !!!

Thanks to my mum and dad, my coaches Mark and Andy, all my friends I shred with Joel, Jordy, Mitch, Paul and everyone else. All my sponsors Arbor, Ashbury, Elm, 3CS, HOWL, Kibs, Sandbox and BSC to helping me get to where I am today.

Thanks to the one and only Andy Lloyd and Jason Michael Smith for the photos

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO : ESS Billy Jam!

ESS BILLY JAM

Saturday afternoon saw perfect weather and a huge crowd of snow enthusiasts converge on the central coast for The Third annual ‘BILLY JAM’ hosted by Erina ESS.

The Billy Jam has become quite a popular event over the last couple years and it is a great chance to catch up with all the shred community and swap stories of summer adventures. The ESS crew had even organised a tattooist in store to carve up willing spectators, freebies if you were willing to get a Billy Reynolds memorial design. Now that’s some fresh shit!

The smiles and beverages were flowing freely on the hill and with the absence of the skate set up this year the place was filled to the brim!

Some of the riders travelled from far and wide for a chance at taking home the cash and prizes. The feature this year was a slight variation on previous set ups, with a flat-down box of decent length, that had a couple of take off options allowing the riders to mix up their bag of tricks. The standard of riding was super high in both the am & pro divisions, with the majority of riders fresh from a season over seas, it was a good chance to see how far some of the kids had progressed from last year. There were also some pretty heavy slams taken by riders of all levels, which no doubt put a smile on some faces in the crowd. It was a hard task for judges Daniel Crean (last years winner) & professional cake eater Dane Tiene to find the top riders in each division. The boys had pretty strict judging criteria outlined and if a rider failed to make it all the way to the end of the feature, his/her score did not count. This meant that some of the bigger tricks getting thrown down were unable to be scored.

Once the smoke cleared from all the bombs being dropped in the finals, it was Queenslander Harley Trivic who took out the amateur division with a bag load of smooth tricks. For the big dogs it was the one and only, everyone’s favourite chicken head, Jye Kearney who took out the Pro division. The Pie man proves again, that he is nearly unbeatable when it comes to rail contests by rasing the bar every time he dropped in. He even pulled out the ol’ crowd pleasing back flip. Everyone then headed to what we dubbed “the Cucumber Hotel” for the after party shenanigans.

The event seemed to go off with out a hitch and we must thank the hardworking ESS crew for putting on another cracker event.

 See you all next year.
Jye West!
